Contiki’s goal is to reduce trip emissions by up to 36% within Europe where HVO biofuel is available, expecting to reduce the emissions of trips associated with transportation from 4,121.52 tCO2e to 2,648.6 tCO2e (savings of 1,472.92 tCO2e). As of May 2024, Contiki has used 60% of HVO fuel on its trips, amounting to 256,633.95 litres of biofuel. This initiative has saved around 746.55 tCO2e (47%), indicating that half of the initial goal has been achieved, we have exceeded our carbon savings forecast from January to May by 21%.
Contiki views HVO biofuel as a low-carbon transition fuel until zero-emission vehicles are available that are appropriate for our operations. The use of HVO biofuel offers our travellers the opportunity to travel by coach with a smaller footprint as compared to coaches using regular diesel fuel, and an even smaller footprint than travel by air. We aim to increase our use of HVO biofuel where available for greater carbon savings, ultimately helping us achieve our near-term science based target, to reduce trip emissions by 27.5% by 2030, and achieve net zero by 2050.
